A behind-the-scenes look at our philosophy.
Here at Big Lake we believe that every person is a leader and leadership is empowerment. Effective empowerment is building leaders. Delegating tasks builds followers, but empowering with authority builds leaders. Let others make decisions, use their creativity, and complete tasks on their own. When leaders tend to control, they are afraid of letting go of authority because control comes out of fear. Therefore, giving the freedom and ownership to people to complete tasks how they see best fit, builds a character of leadership instead of follower-ship.
This summer we intentionally want to recognize leadership traits in each camper. We believe that which gets recognized, grows. We believe in empowering leadership through calling out leadership traits. Leadership traits could be:
responsibility, kindness, engagement, self-awareness, humility, persistence, open-mindedness, generosity, empathy, patience, positivity, collaborative, authenticity, enthusiasm, confidence, courage, respectfulness, care, organized, passion, helpful, focused, selflessness, thoughtfulness, visionary, compassion
At Big Lake Youth Camp, building a leader in every camper can be just as simple as RAD campers preparing their own meal, having a leader of the day for the group, or serving in the kitchen by washing dishes.
Everyone is a leader because each person has influence in his or her life whether it’s to the sibling, classmates or co-workers. Let’s empower each other.
