Langtang Leadership Expedition ( ages 18+)

The Basics:
Who: This course is for adults (18+) seeking to advance leadership skills. People need to be in excellent shape with the capacity for hiking many hours per day carrying a 30 lbs. backpack.

What: This is an adventure-based, experiential, professional-growth course using the framework of empowering leadership.

Where: This expedition begins in Kathmandu, Nepal and travels to the majestic Langtang Region of the Himalayas. It concludes in Kathmandu.

When: March 18-April 5, 2020

Cost: $2,199 (Early bird rate until December 31, 2019). $2,399 per person after December 31. Price includes meals on trek, lodging, travel insurance, and transportation within Nepal. Excludes 5 meals in Kathmandu, international airfare, Nepali visa, tips for Nepali guides and porters, and souvenirs.

Guides and instructors

Lead American Instructor: Les Zollbrecht, holds a master’s degree in leadership. Les has served the past 5 years as Director of Big Lake Youth Camp and previously directed Mountain Leadership Institute, where among numerous other expeditions in the US, he lead four Himilayan expeditions to 18-20,000' peaks in Nepal.

Lead Nepali Trekking Guide: Jagat Lama, directs Independent Trekking Guides. He has guided hundreds, if not thousands, of people through Nepal. He has dedicated his life to the people of his home community of Kumari, where he has helped build a women's skill center, elementary school, clinic, and coffee farm.

The Trek

The Langtang Region is an unparalleled combination of natural beauty and cultural riches. This area near the Tibetan border was previously a restricted zone. In the past few years the unexplored regions of the Langtang National Park have been developed into the Tamang Heritage Trail. The people in these communities are mostly of Tamang and Tibetan origin. The craftsmanship, dress, traditionally built stone houses, and the beautifully carved wooden porches reflect the solitude and the serenity of the Himalayan scenery.

Itinerary

Day-01: Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to Tibet Guest House.

Day-02: Drive from Kathmandu to Kumari. Load our gear in Land Cruisers and drive the 4wd road to Kumari. Here we will visit the ancestral home of Jagat Lama, our lead Nepali trekking guide. We will tour the Kumari project consisting of a women's skills center, medical clinic, school, and coffee farm.

Day-03: Drive from Kumari to Syabrubensi (1466m.) 6 hrs by Jeep.

Day 04: Syabrubensi - Gatlang, 2240m Today we hike to the Tamang village of Gatlang. After having our breakfast, we leave behind Syabrubesi and experience awesome views of the Himalayas including the Ganesh Himal. We will end in the beautiful and historic village of Gatlang.

Day 05: Gatlang - Tatopani, 2600m Today is the longest day of the trek. We will slowly descend alongside the Bhotekoshi river and stop for lunch. Then we ascend towards Tatopani crossing suspension bridges. We end the day soaking in the wonderful hot springs of Tatopani.

Day 06: Tatopani - Thuman, 2340m Today, following the Tamang Heritage Trek, we ascend towards the stunning Nagthali Danda. After enjoying the views from this vantage point, we descend towards the Tamang village of Thuman.

Day 07: Thuman - Timure, 1762m Today, we explore the beautiful cultural villages as we make our way to Timure

Day 08: Daywalk - Rasuwagadhi (1815m) Tibet border, overnight at Timure We will be walking for a day towards Rasuwagadhi which is near the Tibetan border. Finally, we return to Timure for our overnight stay.

Day 09: Timure - Bridim, 2230m On this day, we make our way to the Tibetan-influenced Buddhist village of Bridim situated in the foothills of the Himalayas. There are numerous monasteries nearby to see as well as ancient stone houses.

Day-10: Bridimg – Langtang (3430m) – 6 hrs. We make our way to the bustling village of Langtang. This is a really special place boasting a local cheese factory and an incredible view of Mount Langtang Lirung.

Day-11: Langtang – Kyanjin Gompa (3830m) – 2hrs. We will enjoy the breathtaking Himalayas as we make our way to the famous meditation temple known as Kyanjin Gompa. We will have great views of Yala peak, Langtang Himalayas, Dorjelakpa, Nayakang, and Ganjala peaks.

Day-12: Kyanjin – Lama Hotel – 4 hrs. Today we will follow the stream back to the Lama Hotel.

Day-13: Lama Hotel – Syabru Bensi– 5 hrs. It is the last day of the trek. We descend through the beautiful valleys to spend the night in Syabru Bensi.

Day-14: Today is the final day of our trek as we conclude our Tamang Heritage Trek and return towards the capital city of Kathmandu by regular public bus or private Jeep and stay overnight at the Tibet Guest House.

A summit option has now been added for those interested. Make sure to check the box if you would like to be included. There is an additional charge for this option.

This preteen camp is designed to introduce younger children into the world of summer camping. Adventure camp offers a slower pace and the week is a little shorter. Adventure Campers get a taste of everything Big Lake is about. Instead of selecting one primary morning activity, your camper will get to try them all!



Big Lake’s other preteen camps feature our traditional camping programs available for youth ages 10-17. Preteen Camp campers select one skill-building activity that they focus on each morning, Monday through Friday. Campers’ afternoons are spent rotating through many of the other great activities, including the Big Lake Mall, blob, and Sea Wolf. Evenings are full of fun group games and end with our awesome Campfire program. The preteen camp daily schedule allows campers to enjoy all that Big Lake has to offer.

Take your climbing skills to the next level with Advanced Rock Climbing RAD. This camp will better your climbing technique, plus you will have the opportunity to learn skills such as anchor systems, knots and belaying that will ready you for climbing on your own. This off-site camp takes place at the most popular climbing location in the northwest, Smith Rock State Park. Your week will also include a fun day of rafting the Deschutes River. Climbing shoes and harness provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

RAD Back Country Adventure | $564

Experience the back county up-close and personal in this backpacking adventure! Travel to one of the beautiful areas near Big Lake Youth Camp on a four day journey, tent camping along the way. Learn what it's like to be self-sufficient and secure in an environment without Taco Bells or televisions. Our RAD staff will help you learn to appreciate a whole new universe called nature.

RAD Counselor in Training (CIT) | $329

As a Counselor in Training (CIT), enjoy the fun of camp while learning many of the skills needed to work at Big Lake Youth Camp! As a CIT you will be assigned to assist one of our amazing Big Lake counselors with their cabin of 7-9 year old campers. This camp will give you the incredible opportunity to observe and experience first-hand what is involved in being a camp counselor. The focus of this camp is learning what it takes to be a staff member in charge of supervising campers. We hope as a CIT you will learn skills that can be used throughout your life and enable you to work more effectively with children. This is a 5-day camp for campers ages 15-17. RAD Fly Fishing | $584

Big Lake is excited to announce our fly fishing camp! In this camp you will begin your journey to fishing bliss by learning to cast in still lake waters then adventure to some secret and wild river areas to enhance your cast. After learning the bugs of the river, you will create your own flies to attract fish. Then, you will board rafts and glide down the upper Deschutes River, all the while being coached by some of the most inspiring, knowledgeable and fun fishermen in the field.

The High Desert Wakesports (HDW) camp is a powerful time spent in the summer sun behind some of the best boats in the world. You'll boat in to a rustic campsite where you'll spend your time learning new tricks of the trade from experienced and savvy instructors. This camp features spectacular wakeboarding, waterskiing, wakesurfing and even barefooting. It is designed for the fun-lovers that want to sharpen their water skills and build life-long friendships along the way. This camp takes place off-site at one of Central Oregon's desert lakes. For HDW 1, campers will return to Big Lake Youth Camp's main campus on Friday to enjoy our weekend programming and for HDW 2 campers, you will head home to tell your stories of time well spent on the lake!

RAD Horse Extreme | $514

Experience intensive horse training in natural wilderness settings. Use Big Lake as your base camp and take trips into Oregon's Willamette National Forest. Make arrangements to bring your own horse or develop a relationship with one of ours. RAD Staff in Training | $349

A Staff in Training (SIT) camper stays in a cabin with other SIT campers and one of our Big Lake staff members. As a SIT you will have the opportunity to observe and try out a number of staff positions including instructor of land activities (examples: art, digital photography, drama, survival adventure), instructor of water activities (examples: swimming, canoeing, waterskiing), office/headquarters staff, kitchen staff and maintenance staff. SITs are not able to observe camp counselors. Please sign up for our Counselor in Training camp if you would like to experience that job. SIT campers are asked what type of job they are interested in, and they are able to try it out! We hope this camp will help you learn life skills such as organization, work ethic, personability, and effective communication. Have fun and learn while you work with Big Lake staff as your mentors. Get ready for some surf, sand and sun on the Oregon Coast at this exciting camp. Big Lake brings in professional instructors to partner with our awesome RAD staff team to teach you the basics and beyond of the freedom and beauty of surfing. Experience the fun of camp while learning what it would be like to work at Big Lake! As a Wrangler in Training you'll have the opportunity to shadow and work with Big Lake’s awesome wranglers and beautiful horses. You will be able to assist Big Lake’s wranglers as they teach campers in our REG Camp horsemanship program. If you are passionate about horses and are interested in working at Big Lake someday, this camp is a great fit for you because it allows our staff to get to know you and your skills! Please note that some basic horse experience is required for this camp and that participation in the WIT program does not guarantee a future position as a Big Lake staff member. The Wrangler in Training Camp is for ages 15-17.

Family Camps (all ages)

Family Camp 1 & 2 - Registration opens Sunday, February 23

We often hear adults say “Camp sounds like fun! Can I come?” Yes you can! Family Camp makes it possible for people of all ages to have the Big Lake experience. Join us for 4 nights and 5 days of outdoor fun. Reside with your family in our rustic A-frame cabins, play in the water or on land, and compete in canoe races, horseshoe, or basketball shoot-outs. Sail across our pristine, clear lake, use our latest water-ski/wakeboard equipment, hike down the Pacific Crest Trail, mountain bike, and horseback ride – we’ve got it all! You and your family can participate in activities together, or we offer free child care for kids ages 4-6. And to top off the day, join us for an evening program of singing, awards, and plays. The cost of Family Camp is all inclusive – meals, activities, and accommodations are all included. Our meals are vegetarian, homemade, and delicious. Wake up to fresh blueberry muffins, waffles, and eggs. Scarf down burritos with all the fixins’ for lunch. At dinner chow down on pasta with homemade marinara and pesto. Family Camp is a great, affordable way to enjoy nature, experience outdoor activities, and reconnect with your family. Come join us for this exciting adventure!

Check-In for Family Camp is at 4:00 PM, dinner is at 5:30 PM. No bus transportation is available during Family Camps.

Day campers - $135 ages 13+, $105 ages 7-12, $75 ages 3-6, FREE ages 0-2. These prices include access to all BLYC's activities and programing, plus 3 meals a day. Options for overnight lodging might include the state campground across the lake or staying in the town of Sister, Oregon which is about a 25 drive away from camp.
